How do the Uniswap Solidity smart contracts work?

In this tutorial we will discuss how the Uniswap automated market maker Solidity smart contracts work. We will discuss the basics of Uniswap. Then we will review how the Uniswap program work.

Uniswap Basics

The most popular decentralized exchange on Ethereum is Uniswap. Uniswap is a simple program. The protocol or set of smart contracts facilitates automated transactions between cryptocurrency tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. There is no orderbook and no third party required to oversee trading. The systems consists of users and smart contracts.

Uniswap works with a model that involves liquidity providers creating liquidity pools on uniswap. Liquidity providers contribute equivalent values of two tokens to a smart contract. These liquidity providers and are essentially “making a market” in the tokens they lent to the smart contract. In return liquidity providers earn a portion of trading fees equivalent to their share of the pool on Uniswap. Anyone can be a liquidity provider.

Tread with caution

Anyone deploy a copy of the Uniswap contracts to clone the exchange. In addition there are no listing requirements to trade on Uniswap so anyone can create a trading pair. There are many uniswap clones that are full of garbage tokens so be careful!

If you want to read more about how Uniswap works read here https://uniswap.org/docs/v2/protocol-overview/how-uniswap-works/

Uniswap Solidity smart contracts

The uniswap exchange consists of multiple contracts that need to be deployed in a specific order. The exchange wallet needs to be set in the constructor of the factory contract. The factory contract needs to be set in the constructor of the router contract. The requirement is to deploy the contracts in the following order:

  1. Factory Contract

The Factory is responsible for creating new exchange contracts for each ERC20 token pairs.

  1. Router Contract

The router performs requirement checks needed for swapping tokens, adding liquidity, and removing liquidity.

One can go to the Uniswap GIT repo and deploy their contract directly https://github.com/Uniswap. Read through their code, clone their project as there is a lot of interesting information in their repo.

To learn how the Uniswap system works I flattened (modified dependencies) the factor and router solidity contracts below so one can deploy them in Remix directly. This will allow you to deploy them to the test network without using Truffle. Do not use these contracts in a production environment. This is for learning only to understand the capabilities of these contracts and the power of Ethereum.

Review the code below. Learn how some of the most complex decentralized applications are very basics. As you can see a lot of the code below are libraries or interfaces.

Deploy these contracts using Remix and create your own token pairs on the test network. This code is for learning and has not been audited. Use at your own risk.
